Four Category's of Abuse
Abuse can be seen in many different forms. Although most abuse is seen in women, men can be victims as well. Whether the abuser is male or female, they will do what they can to control the victim. Abuse from women to men are seen less because of lack of reporting. There are four different types of abuse and different tactics used to perpetrate the abuse.
Physical Abuse
When most think about abuse, physical abuse is what comes to mind. It is easier to recognize and understand because it is more visible than other types of abuse.
Physical abuse may include:
*Scratches, bites, grabs or spitting
*Pushing, shoving, shaking, restraining to throwing the victim
*Slapping, punching, twisting, strangling or burning the victim
*Throwing objects at the victim
*Causing the victim to drive recklessly
*Locking the victim in or out of the house
*Refusal to help when they are sick, injured or pregnant or withholding
Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse may include:
*Jealousy, assuming your partner will have sex with anyone
*Withholding sex or affection as punishment
*Call them sexual names
*Pressuring your partner to have sex when they don't want to
*Insist that they dress in a more sexual way then they are comfortable with
*Coerces sex by manipulation or threats
*Physically forces sex or sexually violent
*Coerces them into sexual acts that they are not comfortable with
*Inflicts injuries that are sex-specific
*Denies the victim contraception or protection against sexually transmitted diseases
Psychological Abuse
Psychological abuse may include:
*Broken promises, not following through on agreements or take responsibility for their actions
*Verbally attacks and humiliates their partner in private or public
*Attacks their vulnerabilities, that could include language abilities, educational level, skills as a parent, religious and cultural beliefs or physical appearance
*Plays mind games such as when they deny requests that they had made previously or when they undercut their sense of reality
*Forces their partner to do degrading things
*Ignoring partners feelings
*Withholding affection or approval
*Threatens to leave or tells them to leave
*Stalking
*Always claiming to be right
*Unfaithful after committing to marriage or monogamy
Economic Abuse
Economic abuse can include:
*Controlling all the money
*Don't allow your partner to work outside the home or sabotage their attempts to work or go to school or better themselves
*Refusing to work inside or outside of the home or making your partner support the family on their own
*Ruining your partners credit rating
