ESCAPE

History of the Shelter:
Safe Passage was established in 1995 by a group of concerned citizens. This organization was originally volunteer driven and consisted of a 24 hour crisis hotline until April of 1996 when a 9,000 square foot building was donated by the Orscheln company. That is when actual residential services began. Safe Passage elected its own board of directors and received 501 (c) 3 status in October of 1997.

Service Area:
Safe Passage serves 9 counties- Audrain, Boone, Chariton, Howard, Linn, Macon, Monroe, Randolph and Shelby. We are also connected to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, so coverage is national.

Services Provided:
Services are free to resident and non-resident victims and include, but are not limited too; 24 hour crisis hotline, emergency and long-term shelter, clothing, food, organized children's services, weekly support groups, life skills group, medical advocacy, legal advocacy, case management and assistance with crime victims compensation forms.
In addition to these services, we provide our service area with community awareness and domestic and sexual violence prevention events. We give presentations to local schools, businesses, daycares, social service agencies, and churches.

Building Size:
The shelter is 9,000 square feet. We provide 12 private bedrooms with some adjoining to accommodate larger families. We have the capacity to hold a maximum of 41 people.

Accessibility for Disabled Individuals:
We are completely wheelchair accessible, and a room accessories for the hearing impaired.

Board Meetings:
Safe Passage board meetings are held the 4th Thursday or every month at 8am.

Mission Statement

Safe Passage is a non-profit organization that provides help for victims of domestic and sexual violence.  We support the principle that all individuals have a right to a life free of abuse.  We seek to break the cycle of violence through increasing public awareness of the issues of domestic and sexual violence, acting as advocates for victims, coordinating existing resources and providing a safe environment for victims.
